Humanitarian profile

Bolivia is a landlocked country in central South America, two thirds of whose people are indigenous rather than descendants of Spanish colonisers. While it is abundant in energy and mineral reserves, it is one of the region’s poorest countries with most wealth held by an elite, mostly of Spanish ancestry. The country has the second-largest reserves of natural gas in South America. Exploiting these has been a source of tension.
