Thomson Reuters Foundation, the charitable arm of the world’s leading provider of news and information, is looking for a well-rounded and energetic journalist to add editorial expertise to its award-winning humanitarian and legal news websites.
The job will primarily involve sub-editing copy produced by the Foundation’s Asian-based correspondents and keeping our AlertNet and TrustLaw sites updated during Asian hours.
There will also be scope for initiative reporting. In the event of a big natural catastrophe, the successful candidate may also be called upon to help run our Emergency Information Service for disaster-affected populations.
Based in Hong Kong, this is a job that would suit a mid-career journalist with excellent writing and editing skills, as well as an interest in multimedia reportage and web production.
You will work in the Reuters bureau in Hong Kong but be part of an international team that is dedicated to empowering people in need with trusted information, increasing access to the rule of law and improving standards of journalism.
Candidates will need to demonstrate a wide range of skills. You should feel equally comfortable explaining the nuances of the global food aid system in plain and vivid English, hitting the phone to report on relief efforts after a crisis or subbing copy on women’s rights or good governance issues into articles that sing.
Duties will include:
- Subbing and publishing content on our Trust.org family of websites
- Keeping news landing pages updated during Asian office hours
- Liaising and coordinating with the Foundation’s desk in London as well as Reuters desks in Hong Kong, Singapore and London
- Managing a network of Asian-based freelance contributors
- Monitoring local media and other resources for breaking stories
- Advising Asian correspondents on story pitches and structure
- Original reporting on humanitarian, women’s rights, environmental and good governance themes
- Representing Thomson Reuters Foundation in Hong Kong
The Foundation is offering this post initially as a one-year contract. The ideal candidate will have a journalistic background and international experience and be accustomed to operating independently.
This is an excellent opportunity to make a real difference in a dynamic team that aims to put Thomson Reuters principles of speed, accuracy and objectivity at the disposal of our humanitarian, legal and media communities.
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Fluent English – both speaking and writing – a must. Fluency in Mandarin or Cantonese desirable. Other languages a plus.
- Strong editing and writing skills, solid news judgement and a demonstrable interest in humanitarian, rights and good governance issues
- Adaptable to rapidly changing work requirements, including immediate travel to disaster areas
- Computer literacy a must, along with an interest in online media
- Ability to work to tight deadlines, juggle diverse tasks and think creatively
- Strong communication skills
