Famine Crisis Warning for West African Sahel Region

Early warning systems indicate famine is imminent in parts of Mali, northern Burkina Faso and parts of Senegal. Erratic rains have across the Sahel have led to poor harvests. As a result, food reserves are reaching critically low levels across the Sahel. SOS Children's Villages, the world's largest non-governmental organization caring for orphaned and abandoned children, is active in these communities in the region and is taking action to help more children and families at risk.

NGO Uses Smart Card to Help Kenyans Secure Food during Famine

SOS Children’s Villages has partnered with a Kenya-based company to provide an electronic “smart” card that allows villagers affected by drought and famine to obtain food and cash (500 Kenya shillings or $5 USD) directly from local shops.
