Cyclone ‘Giovanna’  

Geneva, February 20, 2012

 

1. Brief description of the emergency and impact

On 14 February Cyclone Giovanna with winds of 185km/hr, a diameter of 1,000km and a displacement speed of 19km/hr hit the east coast of Madagascar between Tamatave and Vatomandry, about 350 kilometers east of the capital Antananarivo, traversing through the central Analamanga, Itasy and out from Menabe region on the western part of the country. The cyclone severely affected regions of Vatovavy Fito Vinany, Alaotra Mangoro, Vakinakaratra, Amoron’I Mania and Melaky.

Since February 14, the National Government Disaster and Risk Management Agency (BNGRC) has been convening meetings on a daily basis to share information on the impact.

2.  Impact

Most of the destruction has occurred on the eastern part of Madagascar along the cyclone trajectory. As of 18 February, 2012, BNGRC has reported 24 people dead, three people missing, 81 injured and 256,117 people affected with 151,869 displaced from their homes.  Details of the extent of damage to homes, schools, churches and roads is still being gathered and compiled by BNGRC and other international organisations together with the Church of Jesus Christ in Madagascar department for development (SAF/FJKM)

3.  National and international response

Through the coordination of BNGRC, the international and national NGOs have dispatched personnel to the affected places where the cyclone has passed to provide care, casualty evacuation, and rescue of isolated people and to conduct assessment of the damage. UNOCHA has provided a flight to the area to make an aerial assessment.

4.  ACT Alliance response

Staff from FJKM head office and SAF/FJKM together with a representative from Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe (DKH) based in Kenya have travelled to the affected areas for assessments.

5.  Planned activities

ACT member, SAF-FJKM is planning to respond  but the response will be informed by data collected in the field when the DKH and SAF assessment team will be back in Antananarivo on Thursday the 23rd
