CANBERRA, Feb 2 (Reuters) - Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard said on Thursday a ferry had sunk in neighbouring Papua New Guinea with a likely "very high" loss of life after media reported at least 300 people were on board.
"This is obviously a major tragedy -- 350 people on board a ship that has gone down," Gillard told reporters in Melbourne.
"It is likely a very high loss of life here," she said, adding Australia was helping Papua New Guinea respond to the disaster.
