BOJ to act if needed, shouldn't underwrite JGBs-Shirakawa

TOKYO, March 22 (Reuters) - Bank of Japan Governor Masaaki Shirakawa on Tuesday reiterated that the central bank will take appropriate action when necessary with an eye on developments in the economy and financial markets.
Shirakawa declined to comment on whether the government should issue bonds to finance disaster relief, but stressed that the central bank should not directly underwrite government debt.
"The BOJ directly underwriting government debt would hurt confidence in the yen," Shirakawa told parliament. (Reporting by Leika Kihara; Editing by Joseph Radford)
