* PAKTIA - Taliban insurgents killed 35 construction workers and wounded 24 in an attack in Paktia province in southeat Afghanistan late on Wednesday, provincial officials said. They said 10 insurgents had also been killed. Thirteen workers were still missing after the assault, provincial government spokesman Rohullah Samon said. The Taliban confirmed it had led the attack but denied it had taken anyone hostage.

A hospital official said three people were being treated for gunshot wounds. Afghan officials say the raid late on Tuesday killed four Afghan civilians, but the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said four armed insurgents were killed. Twelve people were killed and 80 wounded in protests on Wednesday.

* KANDAHAR - One child was killed and four civilians wounded when a bomb hidden in a bag exploded near shops and a shrine in southern Kandahar city, said Zalmay Ayoubi, a spokesman for the Kandahar governor.

KABUL - At least 60 insurgents were killed by Afghan and foreign forces in a three-day operation in northwestern Faryab province, ISAF said in a statement. The offensive started on May 13 in Faryab's Qiasar district, it said. (Compiled by Kabul bureau; Editing by Paul Tait)
