Dec 6 (Reuters) - More than 31,000 people have been killed since Mexican President Felipe Calderon launched his military campaign against drug cartels when he took office in 2006.

The following are selected incidents during the past week in the escalating drug war that has alarmed investors, tourists, residents and allies such as the United States.

CUERNAVACA - Mexican soldiers captured on Thursday a 14-year-old U.S. citizen suspected of being a drug gang hitman as he attempted to travel to the United States. Edgar Jimenez, known as "El Ponchis," worked for the South Pacific cartel in Morelos state, outside Mexico City, the army said. [ID:nN03102123]

MORELIA - Retired General Manuel Garcia Ruiz, who led Calderon's first military charge into Michoacan in December 2006 and took over this summer as the state's police chief, said on Nov 29 that drug gangs had threatened to kill him. [ID:nN29237759]

MONTERREY - Suspected drug hitmen killed five people including two minors in separate attacks on Wednesday in Mexico's richest city, Monterrey, and dumped their bodies on busy highways, police said.

MEOQUI - Suspected drug hitmen killed the 36-year-old police chief of the town of Meoqui in Chihuahua state on Nov 29, a rare attack on a female Mexican law enforcement official, the Chihuahua state attorney general's office said. [ID:nN29234597]
