Haiti anti-elections protesters clash with police

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Dec 5 (Reuters) - Stone-throwing Haitian protesters demanding the annulment of elections held a week ago clashed on Sunday with riot police next to the damaged presidential palace in the capital, witnesses said.
The police responded with tear gas, causing the demonstrators to scatter and blowing stinging gas clouds over a large camp of homeless survivors from the Jan. 12 earthquake in front of the palace in Port-au-Prince.
About 2,000 protesters staged their second march in three days in Port-au-Prince to demand the cancellation of the troubled Nov. 28 elections, in which a group of presidential candidates denounced "massive fraud".
The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Haiti and international observers have cautiously endorsed the elections held a week ago and called for calm ahead of the announcement of preliminary results expected on Tuesday.
