June 13 (Reuters) - Following are statements from Indian policymakers as well as the latest news and scheduled events.
* Denotes new entry.
* India's environment minister has asked the eastern Odisha state government to ensure that the acquisition of land for POSCO's proposed $12 billion steel plant site take place "only through peaceful and law-governed means", the Economic Times reported on Monday.
"While all parties should adhere to democratic norms and procedures, I earnestly hope that the state government will not take any precipitate action," Jairam Ramesh said.
"Dialogue and discussion, not coercion is as essential to ecological security as it is to democracy."
CONTEXT NEWS
* About 2,000 villagers protested on Saturday against POSCO's planned steel plant in Odisha, formerly known as Orissa, with women and children forming a human ring around the site.
Ramesh gave the plant clearance in January on certain conditions, including ensuring that tribal rights and forest protection laws are observed.
Protests, environmental concerns and government inquiries into alleged illegalities have delayed the South Korean company's Odisha mill project, for which agreements were signed in 2005.
