MAIDUGURI, Nigeria, Dec 30 (Reuters) - A radical Islamist sect attacked a police vehicle in northeastern Nigeria, killing seven people in the latest in a series of attacks by the group in the last week, the military said on Thursday.
A military spokesman said the vehicle was "burnt to ashes" in Wednesday's attack by the Boko Haram group at a bus station in the Dala area of Maiduguri. Eight people were wounded.
Boko Haram, which wants strict Islamic law imposed throughout Nigeria, claimed responsibility for Christmas Eve bombings in the central Nigerian city of Jos which led to the deaths of at least 80 people. [ID:nLDE6BR0FB]
Nine people died in two other attacks by the group in Maiduguri this week. [ID:nLDE6BS0FX] [ID:nLDE6BP046]
The group, whose name means "Western education is sinful" in the Hausa language spoken across northern Nigeria, is loosely modelled on the Taliban movement in Afghanistan.
Maiduguri sits in one of Nigeria's poorest regions near its northeastern borders with Cameroon, Chad and Niger.
