U.S. eyes agreement on "green growth" at APEC

WASHINGTON, Oct 26 (Reuters) - The United States hopes to use the meeting of Asia-Pacific leaders next month in Hawaii to begin tearing down barriers to trade in environmental goods and services, the top U.S. trade official said on Wednesday.
"We're putting great focus on the Asia-Pacific because that's where the world's most dynamic economies are expanding rapidly and creating significant opportunities to increase U.S. exports and jobs," U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk said in prepared remarks.
The United States hopes the 21-member economies of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum will reach agreement at the leaders meeting on initiatives to promote "green growth," Kirk told a business group.
"We are seeking to address tariff and non-tariff barriers to environmental goods and services. Such steps will promote trade in environmental goods and services, as a new source of economic growth."
U.S. officials are also pressing for APEC agreements in two other priority areas: reducing regulatory barriers to trade and strengthening overall trade and investment ties throughout the region, Kirk said. (Reporting by Doug Palmer)
