Foundation documentary wins top photojournalism award
Surviving the Tsunami: Stories of Hope, a Thomson Reuters Foundation multimedia documentary created for the fifth anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami, has won a top prize in the prestigious Best of Photojournalism Awards 2010.
Judges in the contest run by the U.S. National Press Photographers Association gave "Surviving the Tsunami" second place in the News or Feature Multimedia Package category, which highlights the use of audio, video and animation for "cutting-edge storytelling" on the web.
"Each of the video stories is well shot and edited, capturing some true 'moments' while portraying the vastness of the disaster," the judges wrote "Of particular excellence is the choice to parse information into 'By the Hour' and 'By the Numbers' in the 'Waves' component of the data visualisation section.
"Surviving the Tsunami" was a joint production of Thomson Reuters Foundation and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, in partnership with MediaStorm. The project gave survivors a chance to tell their own extraordinary stories, with help from the Foundation's AlertNet; reporters and top Reuters photojournalists."
