GENEVA, September 30 (UNHCR) - Hundreds of delegates are taking part in the annual meeting of UNHCR's governing Executive Committee (ExCom), which began this morning with a high-level segment on Syria.
UN High Commissioner António Guterres and senior guests were due to address the high-level gathering, which is being attended, among others, by government ministers, including from countries neighbouring Syria. Also participating are key UNHCR partners and the heads of several major UN organizations.
In light of the continuing humanitarian crisis in Syria and the surrounding region, this year's ExCom meeting opens with a special High-Level Segment on Syria running all day today and continuing till early Tuesday afternoon.
The more than 700 delegates will discuss international solidarity and burden-sharing for countries hosting large Syrian refugee populations.
On Tuesday, the High Commissioner will formally open the 64th annual session of ExCom. The meeting will review and approve the agency's programmes and budget, advise on international protection and discuss a wide range of other issues with UNHCR and its intergovernmental and non-governmental partners.
Side events will include discussions on refugees from Somalia and Afghanistan as well as protection of Syrian refugee children.
