WASHINGTON – In a Monday blog post, The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) summarises some of the reactions from around the globe following their series of stories based on a leak of 2.5 million secret offshore records. Dozens of countries have stepped up enforcement against tax evasion or opened investigations against individuals since the stories were published, the ICIJ reports.

BLANTYRE, Malawi - Malawi is braced for the mass trial of 100 civil servants, politicians and businesspeople involved in the alleged looting of more than $100m from government coffers, a case that has become a litmus test for foreign donors backing the government of Joyce Banda, The Guardian reports. The "cashgate" trial is scheduled to start on Wednesday under pressure from donors who bankroll 40 percent of the government's budget and who have said they will withhold some aid until it is clear that it is not being misused, the newspaper said.

PRETORIA - Tribalism is a challenge to South Africa, perpetuates corruption and needs to be tackled with effort and intellect, South Africa’s Independent Online reported former president Thabo Mbeki as saying. “When a minister comes from a certain region, so will the officials in that department,” the news website quoted Mbeki as saying.
