NEW DELHI (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – Indian police have detained a woman who beat to death a man she accused of raping her five-year-old daughter, the Hindustan Times reported on Monday.

Police in the central city of Ranchi said the woman bludgeoned her 23-year-old neighbour with an iron rod. The woman told police her daughter complained of pain in her private parts and then recounted how the man had lured her with chocolates and raped her in a field.

"He raped my daughter, I killed him... what's wrong in it?" the woman, who is in her mid-thirties, told reporters, according to the newspaper.

A report by the Asian Centre for Human Rights in April last year said 48,338 child rape cases were recorded in India from 2001 to 2011, and the annual number of reported cases had risen 336 percent over that period.

"These are only the tip of the iceberg as the large majority of child rape cases are not reported to the police while children regularly become victims of other forms of sexual assault too," stated the report, citing figures from the National Crime Records Bureau.
