ALMATY, March 18 (Reuters) - A consortium developing Kazakhstan's huge Kashagan oilfield said on Tuesday it had appealed a 134.2 billion tenge ($737 million) fine for ecological damage at the offshore deposit imposed by a regional authority of the Central Asian nation.

"We ... appealed the ecological fines," a spokesperson for the North Caspian Operating Company (NCOC) which develops the oilfield in the Caspian Sea, told Reuters, requesting anonymity.

The appeal was filed at the regional environmental department of the Atyrau Region in western Kazakhstan where Kashagan is located.

"Whether we appeal also at national level will be decided at a later stage," the NCOC official said. (Reporting by Dmitry Solovyov, editing by David Evans)
