OTTAWA, Jan 14 (Reuters) - Canadian Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver, a key driver behind the government's push to boost mining and oil extraction, underwent heart bypass surgery earlier this month and will be recovering for six weeks, officials said on Monday.
Oliver, who had no previous record of heart trouble, had the operation on Jan. 3 and is recovering well at home, they added.
The 72-year-old minister has spearheaded a push to cut red tape and make it easier for firms to build major energy infrastructure projects such as oil pipelines.
Canada's Parliament adopted a set of more relaxed rules last year despite protests from green activists who said the move would boost the chance of an environmental disaster. (Reporting by David Ljunggren, editing by G Crosse)
