MILAN, Oct 17 (Reuters) - The European Commission said on Wednesday it had launched a probe into tax and welfare breaks offered by the Italian government to companies affected by earthquakes and natural disasters since 2002 to see if they met state aid rules.
In a statement, the Commission said it had asked Italy to halt the measures until it had ascertained whether they met EU rules on state aid.
