LIBYA: 22 houses declared safe, amongst 34 EOD tasks last week

MAG’s clearance teams in Libya found and removed 25,492 Explosive Remants of War last week.

This total included five cluster submunitions, five missiles, two MANPADS parts and 19,551 Small Arms Ammunition.

The eight teams conducted 34 Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) spot tasks and 53,018m² of Battle Area Clearance (BAC).

Clearance tasks were conducted in 22 houses, 12 farms and one road, as well as in ammunition storage areas (ASAs) in Misrata, Al Qa’a and Ajdabiya.

Community Liaison teams delivered 37 Risk Education sessions to 1,206 direct beneficiaries and reported 40 new dangerous areas.

Zintan

MAG's Zintan teams conducted BAC in the ASA in Al Qa’a village, clearing 1,108m² and locating ten items of unexploded ordnance (UXO). They also conducted eight EOD spot tasks, clearing eight farms.

Community Liaison teams conducted 23 Risk Education sessions in Zintan, Qasr El Hajj, Shakshouk (El Rujban) Kikls and El Josh, for 683 beneficiaries (259 boys, 383 girls, 11 men and 30 women).

They also reported nine new dangerous areas in Qasr El Hajj, El Josh, Zintan and El Rujban.

One new accident was recorded: an elderly man who found a 14.5 bullet during shepherding; he hit it against a hard rock and lost two fingers from his right hand.

Nafusa Mountains

The Nafusa Mountains team trained four Community Focal Points – groups made up of a representative range of men, women and young people – in Zintan, two police officers and two teachers.

MAG staff met with Mr. Khaled El Badawi, Director of Radio Jado, to discuss further Risk Education messages to be broadcast.

Misrata

The two Misrata teams continued ASA clearance operations at the Misrata Air Academy. They conducted 47,000m² BAC and found 2,191 items of UXO and two MANPADS components.

Seven Risk Education sessions were conducted, with 150 beneficiaries (74 boys, 61 girls, 11 men and four women). Two new Community Liaison Officers were also trained during the week.

Sirte

In Sirte, the teams conducted 26 EOD spot tasks, in 22 houses and on four farms.

Community Liaison teams delivered 17 Risk Education sessions in Harawa, Sultan and Sirte, for 212 boys, 142 girls, four men and 15 women. They also reported 28 new Dangerous Areas and distributed 237 items of Risk Education materials.

Ajdabiya

Both Ajdabiya teams worked in the Hnya ASA, conducting 1,210m² BAC and removing 3,627 items.
