Philippines President Benigno Aquino, who lives in an overwhelmingly Catholic nation, expressed his openness to gay marriage but said he is in a “dilemma” over allowing gay couples to adopt children, the Philippine Star reported.
Aquino made the statement during his trip to the United States. He said marriage is a choice consenting gay adults can always make “so long as it doesn’t hurt anybody else” but said he is not sure whether a child should face such a complicated issue at a young age, the Star reported.
The Philippines is one of only two states in the world that do not allow divorce and the powerful Catholic Church opposes the use of artificial contraception.
