NAIROBI (TrustLaw) – A 16-year-old Kenyan schoolgirl committed suicide by hanging herself with a bed sheet because she was scared of her parents' reaction, The Star reported on Tuesday.

Relatives found Purity Murugi's body dangling from the roof of her bedroom on Monday morning.

The girl may have feared the pain, humiliation and rejection she was bound to face from family members, the newspaper reported Area District Officer Fridah Kawira as saying.

The government's district officer called on parents to give their children counselling and sex education.

Sex education in Kenyan schools is extremely limited, due to the influence of the church, and abortion is only available to the wealthy who know how to work around the country's restrictive laws.
