(Adds stadium search, buildings evacuated, background)

Feb 20 (Reuters) - Texas A&M University is investigating a bomb threat at Kyle Field football stadium, the school said on Wednesday.

Police are searching the 83,000-seat stadium at College Station, Texas A&M said in a statement on its website. Four nearby buildings were evacuated, including the Bright Athletics complex.

The buildings will be closed for the rest of the day, it said.

Kyle Field has been the home of the Texas A&M Aggies football team since the 1920s. It is known for the "12th man" tradition, where students remain standing during games as a sign of support for the 11 players on the field.

The state-supported school in east-central Texas is the flagship of the Texas A&M University System. It has more than 50,000 students and is Texas' first public institution of higher education. (Reporting by Ian Simpson; Editing by Gerald E. McCormick and Bob Burgdorfer)
