NEWS: JAPAN EARTHQUAKE ANNIVERSARY
Two years after the devastating earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster in Japan, UMCOR is still working to support recovery.
UMCOR worked with partner Church World Service to provide immediate emergency relief for families in northern Japan who had to move into temporary accommodations following the disaster. UMCOR also provided for urgent repair and, later, longer-term rebuilding of the Asian Rural Institute, with whom The United Methodist Church has a long association.
As time has gone on, UMCOR’s help has turned to more forward-looking assistance, including:
- Support for small businesses to encourage fuller economic recovery and fuller development,
- A long-term convalescent program for radiation-affected children,
- Support projects for non-Japanese disaster survivors, and
- Assistance and network-building for immigrant women.
One clear emphasis in UMCOR’s commitment has been a substantial focus on communities whose particular problems and needs might otherwise remain hidden or unaddressed. Read more.
A gift to International Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #982450, will support communities like those in Japan who are building long-term recovery after disasters.
PRAYER: INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY (MARCH 8)
On this upcoming day of celebration and concern, praise God for women leaders who bring about change in our world through creativity and passion. Pray, also, for women around the world who continue to struggle under oppression.
UMCOR OPENINGS: MONITORING AND EVALUATION EXECUTIVE
UMCOR is seeking a monitoring and evaluation executive to focus on UMCOR’s international programs in health, water, sanitation and hygiene, livelihoods, sustainable agriculture, nutrition, food security, emergency response, and social and community development. BE SURE TO RECEIVE THE WEEKLY HOTLINE. Some Internet Service Providers like AOL, Yahoo!, Hotmail, and Juno use email filtering software that allows you to add email addresses to a "buddy," "trusted," "safe," or approved list. Please add umcor@umcor.org to your list so that UMCOR messages don't end up in "junk mail" or the "trash."
