NEWS: PROVIDING SHELTER IN THE PHILIPPINES

The southern Philippine island of Mindanao is still undergoing the ravages of deadly typhoons that hit the nation last year.

With the help of UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on Relief, “shelter-boxes” have been shipped from a humanitarian services corporation, D.R. Strategies in Texas, each of which can be used by a family of up to 10 members to create their own new home.

They are a step toward much fuller provisions, but for now will provide sturdier and more protective shelter than many displaced people have so far been able to find.

Sister Maria Famita Somogod of the BALSA Mindanao secretariat, an UMCOR partner in the region, welcomes the shipment of the shelter-boxes: “This is very timely now that we are seeing, after all the efforts to provide shelter for the survivors of Typhoon Washi, that evacuation centers are still cramped.” Read more.

To help with the continuing recovery in Mindanao, you can make a donation to Philippines Emergency, UMCOR Advance #240235.

PRAYER: FAIR TRADE

In the spirit of World Fair Trade Day on May 12, please keep farmers in your prayers this week. Pray for farmers worldwide as they provide food and resources to meet their communities’ needs. Pray for the many small-scale farmers that struggle to earn a fair wage to provide for their families.

ANNOUNCEMENT: CHANGES TO UMCOR REFUGEE MINISTRY

Church World Service, through the support of UMCOR, has begun providing leadership for UMCOR's historic mission among refugees and immigrants. Dr. Jen Kilps, formerly of the Minnesota Council of Churches, will resource UMCOR's network of Refugee and Immigration Coordinators, encourage United Methodist congregational involvement with resettlement, and resource local projects for the displaced in the U.S. Read more.
