ABUJA, March 3 (Reuters) - Three people were killed and 21 injured by an explosive device thrown from a car at an election rally near Nigeria's capital Abuja on Thursday, the latest act of political violence ahead of nationwide polls next month.

The device missed the centre of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) rally in the town of Suleja, on the northwestern edge of Abuja, but landed close to where market women were trading, police said.

"Three people were killed on the spot and 21 wounded," national police spokesman Olusola Amore told Reuters. (For more Reuters Africa coverage and to have your say on the top issues, visit: http://af.reuters.com/ ) (Reporting by Camillus Eboh and Nick Tattersall)
