BISSAU, Dec 23 (Reuters) - The Central Bank of the West African Economic and Monetary Union has blocked funds to Ivory Coast's Laurent Gbagbo and will now recognize his rival Alassane Ouattara as president, according to a bank statement read over Guinea Bissau's Radio Bombolon on Thursday.

The statement said that only appointed members of Ivory Coast's "legitimate government" would have access to funds held in the region's central bank.

Seven of the bank's eight ministers -- excluding Ivory Coast's minister -- had met in Bissau to discuss Ivory Coast's political crisis on Thursday before making the statement. (Reporting by Alberto Dabo, editing by Tim Pearce)
