About the Start Network

Start Network is a consortium of 19 leading NGOs working together to connect people in crisis to the best possible responses.  In order to meet the needs of crisis-affected people in a future of great uncertainty and complexity, we believe that the humanitarian sector must change. The Start Network members collaborate because the change that is demanded cannot be achieved by any single organisation acting alone.

The network extends to nearly 7,000 partner agencies, comprised of over a quarter million staff working in 200 countries and territories. Start is presently hosted and incubated by Save the Children UK on behalf of all Member Agencies; and intends to become independent during 2015.

About the role

As Head of Digital & Member Communications you will develop the right information systems and digital ecosystem architecture for a dispersed and growing network of international humanitarian NGO’s. You will identify and implement solutions for the information systems needs of the central Start Team and its service delivery teams, for example in Fund, DEPP and MEL.

You will work with the Head of Communications to manage a communications budget of £45,000. We expect this budget will grow over time as Start Network expands its operations.  Your responsibilities will include:

  • Bringing a new and innovative approach to the Start Network’s use of digital technology and Social media to improve its communications with donors, beneficiaries, member agencies and other stakeholders worldwide
  • Working with external agencies to design and maintain an impactful, simple and useful website, a multi-lingual virtual profile and a strong social media presence
  • Managing the production of new media resources including films, webinars, blogs, social media, online communities, etc.
  • Ensuring the Start Team is optimising its use of the CRM system by capturing information, generating leads and following-up
  • Working with the COO to oversee external consultants implementing recommendations for Start Fund, DEPP/Build and the website based on the recent information systems project report.

About you

Reporting to the Start Network Head of Communications you will have an entrepreneurial mind set and enjoy working in the digital space and implementing information systems solutions. You will have managed a range of senior stakeholders and be capable of overseeing the development of appropriate infrastructure for our growing Network. You will have:

  • A solid understanding of the humanitarian context, strategy, forum, challenges, and innovation
  • Proven ability of bringing new technologies to the table to enable the achievement of the Network’s ambitions for collaboration, communication as well as real-time monitoring, evaluation and learning
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills in order to understand the range and content of the programmes’ work and provide practical solutions to operational challenges
  • Strong and proven experience of working with external partners on websites and with social media platforms including in developing countries
  • Excellent networking and interpersonal skills, including the ability to liaise and communicate and maintain excellent relationships at all levels of seniority.

A second language preferably, French, Spanish, Portuguese or Arabic would be desirable.
