We are looking for an experienced humanitarian professional who is invested in delivering quality humanitarian health programming to join us as Emergency Health Unit (EHU) Operations Lead for West and Central Africa. You will build a highly performing team focused on delivering high quality health interventions in some of the hardest places to work, where the needs for children are greatest.

Working in more than 120 countries, we do whatever it takes to create breakthroughs in the way the world treats children. Our Humanitarian department integrates emergency and development work, through our country programmes. It increases our capacity to meet the assistance and protection needs of children and their families affected by crises. Together, we save children’s lives, fight for their rights and help them fulfil their potential.

As EHU Operations Lead, you will work alongside the Regional Humanitarian Health Advisors to discuss potential and emerging health needs and propose options for deployments to meet humanitarian health needs. With your team, you will become familiar with the overall content, purpose and operational demands of the modules for delivery whilst identifying ongoing needs or gaps in resources. You will engage with the identified priority countries both remotely and on visits with your team, to prepare for emergency health deployments in likely categories of need whilst establishing agreed ways of working. In addition you will:

  • Work with the head of operations, project manager, logistics manager, HR officer and finance partner on deployment budget planning and proposal development
  • Lead your team’s shared and individual development needs while maintaining readiness
  • Lead the appropriate and timely deployment of your team, during assessment, design, implementation and close-out phases
  • Represent the EHU to the Senior Management Team and throughout the Country Offices ensuring there are clear ways of working and understanding of the purpose and scope of the EHU
  • Line manage your team providing direction and guidance on competing priorities and urgencies of the response.

To be successful as EHU Operations Lead, you will have experience of establishing emergency health programmes in both chronic and rapid onset emergencies including during first phase of the response. Substantial experience of humanitarian health management including strong knowledge of health cluster and humanitarian architecture and systems is also essential. In addition you will have experience of leading operations during an emergency response along with experience of security management of a team in insecure environments. You must also have:

  • Progressive management experience in positions of increasing responsibility
  • Fluency both in written and spoken English and French
  • Experience in the challenges of managing a remote team
  • Experience of training, capacity building, coaching and mentoring
  • A good understanding of current international affairs and geopolitical dynamics
  • Substantial experience of creating, planning and managing budgets
  • A strong understanding of the essential principles and reality of emergency supply chain operations
  • The ability to reflect and learn from personal and programme performance and act upon lessons learnt.

The ability to travel to remote and insecure locations at short notice is also essential.

At Save the Children we are committed to the safeguarding and protection of children in our work. We will do everything possible to ensure that only those who are suitable to work with children are recruited to work for us. This post is subject to a range of vetting checks including a criminal records disclosure.

Our mission is to inspire breakthroughs in the way the world treats children and to achieve immediate and lasting change in their lives. If you share our mission, are passionate about making it happen and strongly believe you can contribute then join us and we'll give you every opportunity to succeed.
