For more than 30 years, Médecins du Monde, a campaigning medical organisation committed to international solidarity, has been caring for the most vulnerable populations at home and abroad. It has continued to highlight obstacles that exist in accessing health care and has secured sustainable improvements in health-for-all policies. Those working for this independent organisation do not solely dispense care and treatment but condemn violations of human dignity and rights and fight to improve matters for populations living in precarious situations.
MdM currently works in 46 countries across all continents where it focuses on 4 priority areas: caring for the health of migrants and displaced persons, promoting sexual and reproductive health, combating HIV and reducing the harm and risks associated with drug use, crises and conflicts.

Nepal is located on an active seismic belt. On April 25th 2015, an earthquake magnitude 7.8 hit the country 77 kilometres (48 miles) northwest of Nepal`s capital Kathmandu. Several aftershocks were also felt, and waves affected neighbouring countries. The toll of the natural disaster is not yet totally known in part because of major challenges in terms of access to the different affected areas. Numbers are being re-evaluated upward every day as search and rescue teams further reach remote areas, but over people 8000 have died, over 14,000 have been injured, an estimated 60% of infrastructure (roads, health clinics, and urban water supply) has been damaged (source: ACAPS), and an estimated 8 million people have been affected (loss of houses, loss of access to health centres, weakened access to water services,…) in 39 districts.

Following the collapse of buildings, most surviving people had to move to open areas where no infrastructure or service exists. Children, women, the elderly and people with disabilities are particularly vulnerable, as it is more difficult for them to move to open areas. In terms of health, more than 80 percent of health facilities in the five severely affected districts have been extensively damaged and services are being provided outside of the buildings (UNICEF).

MdM will provide life saving activities, health services directly or through support to partners in Kathmandou and in Sindhupalchowk province.
