The position
We are seeking a talented, high-energy, experienced editor with excellent news judgment, strong writing skills, and experience in investigative journalism to spearhead a new project covering property rights. You will be UK-based and help lead a team of up to 10 journalists covering land and property rights across the globe. You will also work with the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s award-winning global news team to produce unique stories that have impact and bring under-reported human rights issues to light. 

Your focus will be on managing a team that produces exclusive news on land and property rights as well as a comprehensive file on the topic and legal shifts. You will work with a team of journalists and freelancers around the world to find stories of real lives impacted by property ownership or lack of ownership, help mine data, research legal documents, and use freedom of information to build strong evidence for ground-breaking stories. You will also help set up a new multi-media digital platform on land and property rights that will aggregate news and information from multiple sources, feature the analyses and opinions of experts in the field, and initiate online debates and discussions on property rights.

Responsibilities:

  • Run a team of up to 10 journalists including videographers covering property rights globally
  • Initiate and oversee thorough investigations into a range of stories of interest to the Foundation using various tools from data dives to freedom of information laws and legal documents
  • Help write and research stories that highlight new angles on under-reported stories in the area of property rights and break new ground
  • Direct the creation of a new mobile-friendly digital platform to aggregate news and information about property rights, gather experts opinions, and initiate online debates
  • Oversee a new section on trust.org dedicated to property and land rights
  • Develop new ways to present and distribute property rights stories online and via social media for maximum impact
  • Develop a global network of freelancers and work with sources to produce unique content 
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills:

  • At least 10 years journalism experience, including a proven track record of breaking exclusive stories by using in-depth investigative techniques
  • Proven management and mentoring experience across a range of cultures
  • Strong writer, able to meet deadlines and work under well pressure
  • Excellent numeracy skills; experience mining and analysing data; familiarity with using online and other resources for investigations; advanced Internet search techniques 
  • Highly organised, self starter and strong team player
  • Experience writing about development and corruption an advantage
  • Experience building social media followings preferred
  • Multi-media skills in audio and video production a plus
  • University degree
