About the Emergency Health Unit.

Save the Children’s origins lie in emergency response. The Emergency Health Unit is a new and exciting programme, part of the humanitarian department, that was recently launched to improve humanitarian response. The unit ensures a pre-standing emergency health capacity, including medical supplies, logistics and skilled medical personnel, to deploy anywhere in the world in the event of a major disaster or conflict. This capacity includes the set up of three mobile teams to support primary health care, mass immunization and diarrheal disease response in the initial phase of an emergency, ideally to be set up within 72 hours of the disaster.

The three mobile teams will comprise of team leader, clinical lead, nurse, logistician, medical logistician and WASH Manager, and will be managed by the Head of EHU Outpatient Department and supported by Save the Children Humanitarian Operations and Technical Unit.  

About the role

 This role will manage the logistics support one of the mobile teams. This will involve either support to emergency primary health care, acute watery diarrhoea or mass vaccination and can include additional surge capacity to other emergency health responses as required. The EHU OPD Logistics Manager will work with the EHU Central Team Logistics Manager to develop standard operating procedures for the programme, supporting emergency preparedness activities and on deployment take responsibility for logistics management within the response under the guidance of the team leader supported by logistics manager and logistics team.  This role will focus on the preparation and design of the relevant mobile unit, working with the OPD mobile team and the EHU Central Team Logistics Manager. When deployed the Logistics Manager will manage the logistics requirements for the response including staff recruitment, orientation and supervision, warehouse management, additional procurement, transport.

About you

Our ideal candidate is flexible, willing to travel up to 80% of the time and has :

  • Significant prior International NGO experience in logistics, preferably, medical, within a complex/large scale country programme and in emergency response/humanitarian environments- preferably in medical epidemic responses such as cholera or similar.

  • Significant experience with medical supply chain management, including: pharmaceutical quality assurance and procurement; drugs management
  • Good understanding of best practices of managing a health facility, including precautions and risk mitigation, managing medical waste materials

  • Experience in all technical areas of logistics operations including procurement, transport/distribution, warehousing and stock management, fleet management, asset management, communications

  • Proficient numerical skills: ability to make calculations such as freight estimates, dimensional weight and percentages
  • Experience of developing and implementing a complex domestic, regional and international supply chain to support large emergency programmes, and coordinating resources to meet the programme objectives

  • Previous practical experience of working on health programmes and knowledge of the particular additional requirements of pharmaceutical supply chain, including importation, cold chain needs and pharmacy management & reporting

  • Proven track-record in managing and supervising others in logistics, including training and capacity building

About the recruitment process
