Background:
The research will be carried out in Rubaya Camp in Masisi, in the war-torn eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The residents of Rubaya Camp are internally displaced people who are continually moving in and out of the camps due to the long-standing hostilities that have plagued the area. Rubaya hosts about 11,000 people and is densely packed. The languages spoken are Kinyarwanda, Kihunde, Swahili, and French. According to Oxfam (one of the agencies that used to provided WASH services in the camp until recently), the latrines are in frequent disrepair. Hygiene promotion is conducted through the hygiene and water management committees; hygiene committees are responsible for maintaining water and soapy water stations for handwashing. Currently, the camp is deemed stable and safe by Oxfam staff to conduct scientific data collection. The research focus on exploring motivators and barriers for handwashing. Key responsibilities:
Field Coordinator: The field coordinator will be responsible for oversight of field staff and consultant security, liaison with Oxfam and other security personnel; hiring and supervision of field personnel; oversight of training, intervention and data collection activities; and maintenance of high quality standards of human subjects ethics research. S/he will also be responsible for liaison with Oxfam senior staff in DRC, other non-governmental organizations, Rubaya camp administrators, and leaders among the displaced persons community. The field coordinator will be expected to review and comment on report(s) generated from this project.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
- Knowledge of public health and one or more other relevant areas (e.g. health promotion, social mobilisation, community development, education, community water supply).
- The post holder should proven practical experience in developing countries in appropriate community health programmes. Some of this time should have been in emergency relief programmes.
- staff management experience and supervision
- Good knowledge and experience of working with different NGOs
- Sensitivity to the needs and priorities of disadvantaged populations especially displaced populations.
- Assessment, research, analytical and planning skills.
- Good oral and written reporting skills.
- Diplomacy, tact and negotiating skills

- Ability to work well under pressure and in response to changing needs.
