Start Network is a consortium of 19 leading NGOs working together to connect people in crises to the best possible responses.  In order to meet the needs of crisis-affected people in a future of great uncertainty and complexity, we believe that the humanitarian sector must change. The Start Network members collaborate because the change that is demanded cannot be achieved by any single organisation acting alone. We promote a way of working that enables international and local humanitarian actors to coexist.

We envision a self-organising system where the agencies best placed to respond to a crisis are empowered to do so. To realise this vision, we are working to catalyse a humanitarian sector that is more diverse, decentralised and collaborative. The Start Network is presently hosted and incubated by Save the Children UK on behalf of all Member Agencies; and intends to become independent during 2015.

About the role

The Start Network is an enabler for organisations to work in different ways.  It is a ‘business to business brand’ and does not have a public profile.  At the same time, communications is a fundamentally important priority for any Network.  As the Start Network grows from its British origins to an international presence, multiple boundaries will need to be crossed: linguistic, political, cultural, and organisational.

The Head of Communications is a critical role for the Start Network, for which few precedents exist. This is a very exciting position, that reflects our dynamic growth. We are seeking an experienced communications leader who can hit the ground running, develop and run an effective communications system to inform and align internal and external stakeholders of the rapidly evolving Network.

About you

 Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Substantial experience and demonstrable success in communications for large organisations, ideally with an emphasis on creative content commissioning, digital and evaluation.
  • Exceptional all-round communications skills both written, editing and verbal, ability to research, innovate, analyse and interpret information and to summarise complex issues, and tailor communications to different audiences and cultures.
  • Sound strategic thinking, project management and planning skills, including ability to turns plans into practical actions and think creatively and innovate.
  • Relevant experience of working with the media generating coverage and raising organisational profile.
  • Excellent networking and interpersonal skills, including the ability to liaise and communicate with research and programme staff and other colleagues,  as well as evolve and debate messages with high level senior managers in a highly politicised environment.
  • Commitment to team working and demonstrable understanding of how to contribute.
  • Attention to detail and ability to prioritise work in order to meet competing deadlines
