Contract length: 12 Months


The role

As a key member of the Regional programme operations and implementation team, the role holder will take shared responsibility for the transformation of the West & Central Africa region to a new operating model whilst delivering Save the Children’s strategy within the region. They will specifically support and enable countries in the West & Central Africa Region by:

Working with Country offices and their management teams to build their operational capacity and strengthen the structure of the field offices that deliver programs

Planning and supporting the management of their resources and assets efficiently and effectively, ensuring that programmes meet their commitments and are accountable to their beneficiaries and donors.

Supporting the country and field offices to work in collaborative ways within the different functional areas in order to deliver programs on the ground in timely and cost effective ways

Helping to build capacity of staff with regard to program delivery while strengthening the operations platform to ensure that countries and field offices are compliant with the Quality Framework

The role ensures that the region/country has the necessary support to achieve delivery objectives and standards across the spectrum of humanitarian and development work.

This position requires considerable travel at least 60% to support Country and Field Offices.

Qualifications and experience

Extensive program and operations management experience in international development and humanitarian programs, including Demonstrated ability to set up operational management systems in a large complex programme

Direct experience of delivery of humanitarian programs, in a technical or operational role, in at least 3 different contexts

Senior management role within a complex country programme and/or in a large scale emergency response

Previous experience of managing technical/programme/operations/support teams in large- scale first phase emergency response is essential

A degree in a relevant field either in relation to development, disaster management, management Knowledge of international humanitarian and development systems, institutions and donors (programmes (including ECHO, DFID and OFDA), and of procedures, accountability frameworks and best practices

Demonstrated ability to thrive in a complex, matrix management environment.

Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills including influencing, negotiation and coaching.

In depth knowledge and experience of logistics systems and requirements in a multi field office, multi programme setting

Security management experience across a large programme

Substantial training and capacity building experience

Cultural sensitivity

Experience of supporting and developing programmatic staff with different backgrounds and expertise

Commitment to Save the Children values.

Ability and willingness to change work practices and hours in the event of major emergencies. Willingness to travel in developing countries (varying, but expected to be at least 60% of time).
