Health programs represent the largest single sector within which IRC currently operates, constituting approximately 45% of the international budget and with activities in 22 countries. Field-based health staff are supported by a headquarters Health Unit comprised of health professionals with many years of experience in humanitarian work. The Health Unit contributes to the effectiveness and comprehensiveness of IRC primary health care programs through technical support, staff development, and institutional learning. The Health Unit ensures quality programs by promoting self-reliance, participation, sustainability, equity, and human dignity. The Health Unit is committed to the development of the field of humanitarian assistance through advocacy, documentation of lessons learned and research.

SCOPE OF WORK: The Nutrition Specialist as part of the Nutrition team is responsible for working collaboratively with health unit and field staff to ensure that nutrition interventions within IRC programs are effective, and fulfill adequate quality standards.  The Nutrition Specialist reports to the Technical Advisor for Nutrition.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide support to IRC nutrition programs in the field, including writing and reviewing proposals, designing assessments and M&E systems, and answering technical questions, during field visits and remotely.
  • Support IRC countries with nutritional assessments in the field, including SQUEACs, SMARTs and IYCF surveys
  • Develop and maintain a centralized nutrition database, that collects information from all IRC nutrition field programs and provides easily accessible information for communications and advocacy documents
  • Support the nutrition team in communications and advocacy efforts to access new sources of funding,
  • Support the IRC nutrition team in the development of tools and guidelines including IYCF and incorporating treatment of malnutrition into the integrated Community Case Management approach
  • Maintain the nutrition team budget, including updating the budget with incoming grants
  • Perform other tasks as negotiated with supervisor

REQUIREMENTS:

  • At least three years experience in the design and implementation of nutrition programs in developing countries, particularly the Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition, in both development and emergency contexts
  • Experience conducting nutritional assessments and surveys in SQUEAC, SMART and IYCF evaluations
  • Proficiency in nutrition data analysis and database management
  • Ability to write clear and effective communications and proposals
  • Masters degree in public health nutrition, or related degree (nutrition, public health, epidemiology)
  • French language skills an asset
  • Ability to travel 30-50% of the time.
