The Thomson Reuters Foundation is seeking a Programme Manager (PM) to join its Media Development team in London.

The Media Development team supports journalist and media outlets to produce and distribute high quality journalism in some of the world’s most challenging environments. The Programme Manager will be working on the front-line of our media development work, ensuring that the Foundation’s projects are creating impact, and always looking to improve on what we do.

Job description

The Programme Manager will directly manage a portfolio of medium and large programmes spread across the world. She/he will deliver quality project management with a high regard to client beneficiary needs.This role encompasses many different work streams and responsibilities. The Programme Manager will lead the full project management cycle from proposing early programme “ideas” and securing funds through to implementing projects and measuring and reporting their progress to donors.

Key tasks, duties and responsibilities

  • Ensure effective delivery of TRF’s Media development programmes, including compliance with client’s and contract’s requirements
  • Hold responsibility for financial oversight of allocated programmes by coordinating with Project Managers, partners and the finance team
  • Produce reports to key stakeholders on programme progress, including preparing narrative, identifying success stories, and providing financial updates to donors
  • Play a key role in securing funds for ongoing programmes. She/he will also be expected to identify new media development project opportunities and produce and pitch technical and financial proposals. 
  • Line manage a small team and encourage collaborative working to deliver the overall programme’s goals
  • Facilitate information sharing within the Media Development team and with other TRF’s units  
  • Represent the Thomson Reuters Foundation to a wide range of stakeholders and at public events
  • Contribute to the development of the Media Development team’s strategy, as appropriate.
  • Travel regularly and internationally to monitor programme implementation and to scope future opportunities

The candidate

Qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience

  • 5 years of experience in a role in journalism/media, international relations, international development, politics or relevant field.
  • Track record in managing successful highly-matrixed projects, ideally with an international element or in developing countries.
  • Experience in remote programme management, programme start-up, mobilisation and close down
  • Experience working with European and international donors including leading on M&E and donor reporting tasks
  • Demonstrable experience of preparing successful fundraising proposals and ability to write technical text.
  • Proven experience of work plan formulation and designing programme milestones

Skills and attributes sought

  • Outstanding project or programme management skills
  • Excellent budget and financial management, including fluency in Excel
  • A team player who can also manage projects with a high level of autonomy
  • Resilience, ability to cope with high-pressure projects and work environments and find solutions to problems when they arise
  • Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • Ability to quickly understand complex information and communicate to non-experts
  • Excellent interpersonal skills – able to establish and maintain positive working relationships both internally and externally.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English Business-level fluency in at least one additional language, working proficiency in Arabic is preferred
  • A strong and demonstrable interest in independent journalism and media.
