Organization

Search for Common Ground (SFCG) is an international non-profit organization that promotes peaceful resolution of conflict. With headquarters in Washington, DC and a European office in Brussels, Belgium, SFCG’s mission is to transform how individuals, organizations, and governments deal with conflict - away from adversarial approaches and toward cooperative solutions. SFCG seeks to help conflicting parties understand their differences and act on their commonalities. With a total of approximately 560 staff worldwide, SFCG implements projects from 56 offices in 35 countries, including in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and the United States. The organization is an exciting and rewarding place to work, with a dedicated and enthusiastic staff who love their work.

Summary of Position

Jordan currently hosts over 600,000 Syrian refugees who have fled the ongoing civil war in their country. The mass influx into an already resource-constrained country threatens the stability of the state, puts the government under significant strain, and exacerbates social and economic tensions between refugee and host communities. In this context, SFCG is hiring for a 4 to 5-week consultancy to conduct an assessment mission in Jordan and write a subsequent report and recommendations regarding potential future SFCG engagement in Jordan. The goal is to identify opportunities for SFCG to engage in Jordan on the Syrian refugee crisis and also to investigate other areas ripe for peacebuilding work. The consultant will articulate SFCG’s complementarity to existing initiatives in the country, identify short and medium-term opportunities, and liaison with potential partners.

The scope of work for the consultant will include the following components:

• Understanding the needs through conflict assessment,
• Identifying SFCG`s added value,
• Identifying potential local and international partnerships,
• Understanding and liaising with the donor base, and
• Producing draft concept notes and proposals.

The consultant is expected to deliver the following outputs, to be specified in more detail in a Terms of Reference: (a) plan and conduct an assessment mission, (b) write and submit a final report of findings in English, (c) meet with potential partners and the donor community in Jordan, and (d) prepare concept notes and proposals for SFCG engagement in Jordan.

Timeframe

The consultant would work for 5-weeks in either October or November 2014.
