Contract length: 2 Years

The role

The Field Manager will be responsible for the day to day management of Save the Children’s Programme in Freetown. This includes oversight and ultimate responsibility for the timely delivery of projects, currently across three sectors: Child Protection, Health, including WASH and Education; as well as the efficient and effective operation of support services – Logistics, Security, Finance and Human Resources/administration. The Field Manager is also responsible for coordinating and leading on programme innovation and development, as well as being the key representative internally and externally for Save the Children’s programming in Freetown.

Qualifications and experience

Essential

  • Significant management experience working in emergency response contexts or fragile states, preferably in West & Central Africa, with a minimum of three years’ experience of managing field operations
  • Education to MSc/MA/MEng level in a relevant subject or equivalent field experience
  • Previous experience of managing a team
  • Strong skills and experience in all aspects of programme cycle management – design and development, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation, including multi sector programmes
  • Sound and mature understanding of rights based approaches/child rights programming to development and participatory approaches in a similar context.
  • Experience in managing health, education and child protection related programmes – preferably in urban contexts.
  • Budget management experience including institutional donors
  • Field level representation with key stakeholders and co-ordination with other NGOs/UN
  • Excellent communication skills, including ability to write clear and well-argued assessment and project reports in English
  • Strong influencing skills and experience in advocacy
  • Politically and culturally sensitive with qualities of patience, tact and diplomacy
  • Commitment to the aims and principles of SC. In particular, a good understanding of the SC mandate and child focus and an ability to ensure this continues to underpin our support

Desirable

  • ECHO and/or DFID programme management experience
  • Consortia experience
  • Media trained
