Juba, South Sudan - with frequent cross-country travel

 3-6 month placement

As our personable, compassionate and level-headed Anaesthetist / Nurse-Anaesthetist you`ll be on the front-line of Save the Children`s emergency health service delivery, supporting rapid facility and scenario assessments and training workshops, and leading on patient management in the area of anaesthetics.

It increases our capacity to meet the assistance and protection needs of children and their families affected by crises. Together, we save children’s lives, fight for their rights and help them fulfil their potential.

 

As part of our Emergency Health Unit, you`ll join an innovative pilot scheme aimed at providing surge personnel support to existing facilities during spikes in crisis, helping to ensure the achievement of health, nutrition, HIV, water sanitation and hygiene objectives. Familiarising yourself with the content and function of the unit – including the clinical components and plans and scope of work –as Anaesthetist / Nurse-Anaesthetist you will also:

 

  • Provide training and assistance in the development of emergency preparedness plans, focusing on mass casualty management, emergency response, and trauma care
  • Contribute to surgical unit assessments, identifying facilities with the potential to host surgical activities and trauma care
  • Assist with programme planning and the procurement of essential materials, drugs and equipment
  • Support the recruitment of theatre staff, ensuring their clinical orientation and training
  • Carry out the full spectrum of pre, intra and post-operative care.

 

You will have the appropriate medical licensing and credentials, alongside a background working in intense environments, preferably in fragile states or crisis settings. Motivated by a desire to serve the most vulnerable, you will have international experience in a similar role. You will additionally have:

 

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • The ability to assess medical conditions quickly and calmly while under pressure
  • A flair for working productively and flexibly in a cross-cultural setting, and in challenging and austere working conditions
  • A commitment to the aims and principles of Save the Children, particularly an understanding of our mandate and child focus.
