Duties and Responsibilities
In an effort to strengthen links between humanitarian scholarship and practice, DPU and Save the Children have formed a strategic partnership, enabling Save the Children to draw upon DPU’s research capacity and scholarly expertise, and giving DPU opportunities to conduct field research that directly informs humanitarian policy and practice. This innovative partnership is aimed at improving the organisation, implementation and understanding of humanitarian activities.
The Research Associate (Humanitarian Affairs Adviser), funded jointly by the DPU and Save the Children, will be the linking point between the two institutions. The postholder will focus primarily on an exciting project aimed at exploring the relationships between ‘the urban’, displacement and humanitarian action in the current context of unprecedented forced displacement processes. This will involve: contributing to the design and implementation of a research programme, including the production of original written outputs; forming working relationships within DPU and Save the Children staff to support the implementation of the research programme and ensure it is of relevance to the work of both organisations; supporting the development of an external engagement strategy, as well as drafting a substantial research proposal to fund the continuation of the research collaboration after the initial year.
The post is funded for a period of 12 months in the first instance, with an immediate start date.
Key Requirements
Candidates must possess a PhD in a relevant field and have a deep understanding of humanitarian action in urban areas. Strong interdisciplinary analytical skills and a capacity in managing and organising information is required. The postholder must also have a capacity for critical thinking and commitment to producing original and challenging ideas to improve humanitarian policy and practice.
The candidate must also have proven ability to complete research projects, be self-motivated, able to work under own initiative, have excellent IT, organisational and communication skills with experience in scientific writing.
