The Thomson Reuters Foundation is seeking a Head of Business Development (HBV) to join its Media Development team in London. The Media Development team supports journalists and media outlets to produce and distribute high quality journalism in some of the world’s most challenging environments.

Job Description:

The Head of Business Development will be responsible for identifying and developing commercial opportunities that ensure incremental revenue in support of the Foundation’s core philanthropic activities. He/she will position Thomson Reuters Foundation as a key provider of media, journalism and communication training to the corporate world and the international development sector.

Key Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the commercial strategy for all journalism, media and communication training

  • Develop new courses and curricula

  • Identify untapped market opportunities

  • Build a pipeline of proposals and coordinate response to tenders

  • Drive sales and marketing activity

  • Manage a broader team of 4 responsible for supporting these objectives

  • Represent Thomson Reuters Foundation at relevant industry and sector-specific events

  • Cultivate business development opportunities through ongoing meetings with key prospects

Required Skills:


The candidate should have experience in the following:

  • Extensive experience in journalism/media organization, international relations and international development

  • Delivery to both the corporate world and the international development sector

  • In depth knowledge of competitive bidding processes and sector specific methodology

  • Coordination of high quality proposals

  • Strong writing skills in English – this will be tested if you are shortlisted for the role

  • Management of successful projects, ideally with an international element

  • Budget development and financial management, including fluency in Excel

  • Need assessment and quality control

  • Demonstrated managerial skills

  • At ease with sales and selling situations

  • Strong communication skills in English

  • Working under pressure and tight deadlines

Desired Skills:

  • The role requires close cross collaboration between different functions within Thomson Reuters Foundation and an ability to communicate and coordinate effectively with multiple stakeholders.

  • The candidate should be confident and experienced with concluding sales interactions

  • Other languages are a plus.
