From £50,000 to £54,000 + benefits
35 hours per week
Farringdon, London (occasional travel)

13 Month Fixed Term Contract from mid November 2015

Working in more than 120 countries, we do whatever it takes to create breakthroughs in the way the world treats children. Save the Children UK’s Humanitarian Department supports the wider Save the Children movement in preparing for and responding to crises around the world. We work to increase the capacity of Save the Children staff, partners and the wider sector to meet the assistance and protection needs of children and their families affected by crises.

We are looking for a proven leader and problem solver to join us as the Head of Humanitarian Capacity Building (HCB). You will take on a senior leadership role located within the Save the Children UK’s Humanitarian Department.

As Head of the HCB team, you will play a leadership role in designing and delivering effective Humanitarian Capacity Building Programmes for the Save the Children movement, as well as for the wider sector, in collaboration with internal and external partners and stakeholders.

The Humanitarian Capacity Building Team (HCB) is located within the Humanitarian Department of Save the Children UK in London with key staff also based in Kenya, Jordan and Bangladesh. The vision of the HCB team is that humanitarian responses will be well staffed by trained professional humanitarians who are able to respond effectively and accountably to affected children and their families. The team aims to respond to the needs of Save the Children and the wider sector to grow and develop a professional, skilled and prepared humanitarian workforce at a time of ever increasing crises, with a particular focus on strengthening national capacity.

The team currently has two main areas of focus: firstly to attract new talent into the sector: and secondly to retain and develop existing humanitarian professionals. As Head of the Humanitarian Capacity Building team, you will:

• Participate in the overall strategic leadership of the Humanitarian Department
• Lead on Save the Children UK’s engagement with Save the Children International and the wider SC family on the design and delivery of humanitarian capacity building programmes for the SC movement
• Represent the team at Global and regional levels
• Build new partnerships and alliances to strengthen the internal and externally facing learning offers within the sector
• Directly line manage 5 staff members of the HCB team (and indirectly a further 15)
• Oversee a yearly budget of circa £3M.

To be successful you will have a genuine commitment and enthusiasm for building the capacity of others in order to enhance the capability of the humanitarian sector. You will thrive in leading a talented team of people and have proven relationship management and networking skills. You will additionally have:

• Excellent project management and organisational skills gained through managing complex cross-organisational projects
• Proven ability to develop, negotiate resources and successfully execute strategy
• A broad understanding of technical sectors/interventions in humanitarian assistance, especially in the area of capacity building
• Budgeting and financial management skills gained through budget-holding responsibilities
• Training/Facilitation/Coaching/mentoring skills
• Donor liaison, proposal development and grant management skills.

It is desirable that you will have an academic/professional qualification at post graduate level or equivalent in international development or a related subject. Ideally you will have working knowledge of French, Spanish, Swahili or Arabic and have the ability to travel internationally, occasionally at short notice.
