Background:
When an emergency hits, Oxfam is there. At any given time our teams are responding to an average of 25 emergencies worldwide. Oxfam's humanitarian work aims to have the maximum impact on the health of populations affected by crises through the integration of Oxfam's various sectoral activities.

Oxfam's humanitarian personnel are responsible for a wide range of activities, including advising Oxfam's international regions on humanitarian response, building regional capacity to respond to emergencies, leading programme development work on key areas such as WASH, public health, food security, HIV and AIDS, protection, gender, and preparedness. They also deliver advocacy on humanitarian issues in developed countries and provide security management advice.

 

The Humanitarian Support  Personnel (HSP) Team comprises of people from around the globe who are deployed from their home base, to countries where Oxfam is delivering humanitarian programmes. HSPs can expect to be deployed to programmes for around 9 months a year and this could be to several countries or just one, depending on the context.

We’re looking to recruit a Anthropologist/Social Scientist to join our HSP team and work on our Water Sanitation and Public Health Promotion programmes.  The post holder will enable our programmes to be underpinned by a good understanding of communities’ beliefs, behaviours and perceptions,  enabling  the other HSP teams to adapt and/or revise their approaches and interventions and  develop appropriate tools and ways of working with communities to enhance community participation and gender equality.
 A good understanding of affected communities will play a crucial role in the quality of the response.
 

About the Role
This role will work closely with other public health promotion and engineering colleagues to assess, design , implement and monitor our humanitarian WASH programmes ensuring that communities are encouraged to engage with the WASH hardware provided. Your skills will support  field teams to develop  community profiles and to better understand cultural norms and community dynamics maximising opportunities for meaningful community participation . Your previous experience of working in a hands on way with communities combined with your work in humanitarian contexts will enable you to lead a small team in designing and delivering the community elements of our WASH programmes. 

 

Contract

We are open to offering this role on a part-time contract, based on a certain number of months of work per year. The salary and leave days entitlements are reduced in ratio of the non-contract months, while the pro-rated salary is paid throughout the year.

 

To provide you with a basis for your preference, below is an overview of three options (starting with a full time contract). Please note that the net salary is an example for calculation purposes, the actual offer would be different as there is a salary review ongoing:

Net Annual Salary (GBP): 30,787                         

Annual time on deployment (months): 10                         

 

Contract Type: 10 months/year              

Net Annual Salary (GBP): 25,656     

Annual time on deployment (months):8.25

 

Contract Type: 9 months/year

Net Annual Salary (GBP): 23,090

Annual time on deployment (months): 7.5

About you

You will have experience of working with communities, undertaking research variety of research methodologies and participatory approaches, and you will have an understanding of public health ideally in emergencies and outside of your own country. You’ll have a good practical understanding of how to analyse and understand the local socio-cultural determinants and behaviours of different communities. In addition, you’ll have good analytical, needs assessment, capacity planning and report-writing skills and excellent communication skills. Add a relevant post-graduate qualification plus a working level of spoken and written English, and you could soon be making a difference at a country level.  One other language such as French, Spanish, Portuguese or Arabic is desirable..

Benefits

Salary:This role attracts a net salary; ‘net’ refers to take home payInaddition to salary Oxfam will meet the tax and social security liabilities of post-holder in their home country. So, the salary you see advertised is the salary you will receive each year. This is reviewed each year and on average will increase by 2% per year.

InsuranceOxfam GB has a comprehensive Medical cover for HSPs while on deployment. This can cover claims from medical evacuation to a contribution towards dental and optical care.  Furthermore Oxfam GB offers comprehensive Travel insurance cover while on deployment, as well leisure travel cover beyond the deployment.

Annual leave: You will receive 33 working days paid holiday per 12 months within which is included any entitlement to statutory Public Holidays which fall in your deployment location. This entitlement increases with the number years worked for Oxfam GB.

TOIL and R&R: HSP members are entitled to up to 10 days TOIL per annum (pro rated) to compensate for time spent away from home base on deployment. This TOIL is automatically accumulated at a rate of one day for each week away from home base. It can be viewed as extra holiday in the way in which it is managed and must be taken within the annual leave year in which it is accrued. While on deployment HSP’s will be entitled to a period of Rest and Recuperation (R&R) as long as they meet the requirements of the R&R policy in country.

Per diem and Accommodation: While on deployment HSP’s will be entitled to a per diem (the per diem is dependent on country policy. Some countries will not have a per diem however RRTs will then be reimbursed for their expenses). Oxfam GB will also provide the employee with accommodation while he/she is on deployment with Oxfam GB
