Fixed-term for 12-months (August 2015 – 2016)

As our open-minded, innovative and collaborative Crisis Anticipation Advisor you`ll join Start Network , a consortium of 24 leading NGOs working together to connect people in crises to the best possible responses. Hosted and incubated by Save the Children (one of the Network`s member agencies).

The Start Network promotes a way of working that enables international and local humanitarian actors to coexist. It envisions a self-organising system where the agencies best placed to respond to a crisis are empowered to do so. To realise this vision, we are working to catalyse a humanitarian sector that is more diverse, decentralised and collaborative. The consortium works in three principal areas: Start Fund (financing for emergency response); Start Build (strengthening civil society capacity); and Start Beta (creating platforms for partnerships and learning).

Assuming a vital role in the Start Network Central team, you will help Network member agencies respond to shifts in risk before humanitarian crisis events occur.  A key objective will be to advance work on how the Start Fund can catalyse much earlier humanitarian action than is currently the case. As Crisis Anticipation Advisor you will also:

  • Provide opportunities for Network members to exchange ideas and collaborate on projects around the areas of risk, anticipation and early warning.
  • Lead on equipping the Start Fund Allocations Committee with improved information and analysis about changes in risk.
  • Establish ways to capture and leverage early warning information.
  • Contribute to and, where appropriate, lead on developing and testing new technology solutions to facilitate the exchange of information and analysis on changes in risk.

You will have significant experience of humanitarian operations including a background in the field, and a solid knowledge of the challenges of responding in slow-onset crises. You will also have strong brokering and facilitation skills, and an excellent understanding of typical humanitarian coordination and collaboration structure and mechanisms. An initiative-taker, influencer and problem-solver, you will have a flair for establishing and maintaining effective relationships across organisational boundaries. You will also have:

  • Substantial experience of humanitarian of the response programming cycle (planning, budget oversight, monitoring, learning).
  • Previous early warning crisis anticipation or humanitarian preparedness experience
  • Commitment to breaking new ground by developing innovative solutions to humanitarian challenges
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to fully understand and define anticipation needs and identify practical solutions to operational challenges.

At Save the Children our mission is to inspire breakthroughs in the way the world treats children and to achieve immediate and lasting change in their lives. If you share our mission, are passionate about making it happen and strongly believe you can contribute then join us and we`ll give you every opportunity to succeed. We look forward to hearing from you.
