Join us as an HIV Adviser and you will become a key member of our dynamic and passionate Emergency Response team making a major difference to children at risk in emergencies world-wide.

Working in more than 120 countries, we do whatever it takes to create breakthroughs in the way the world treats children. Save the Children meets the assistance and protection needs of children and their families affected by crises. Together, we save children’s lives, fight for their rights and help them fulfil their potential.

Generally deployed to the field as the lead HIV Adviser, you will design and advise on programmes whilst working closely with the people delivering them. Often, you will start up new programmes following a needs assessment and on occasions gap-fill in a chronic humanitarian country programme or carry out short-term assessment, programme design, capacity analysis or monitoring and evaluation activities.

You will be expected to lead on supporting country programmes to deliver HIV specific responses such as re-establishment of PMTCT and ART services, as well as to mainstream HIV throughout all sector responses (health, child protection, nutrition, shelter, WASH, education, food security and livelihoods). This is a key role in quality improvement and our aim is to enable an increased number of country HIV programmes to be implemented.

Following training, you will:

  • Prepare, start up, support and oversee HIV programme implementation to ensure timely delivery of programme activities
  • Carry out short advisory visits to country programmes in order to design new HIV programmes, develop proposals or review/monitor/evaluate ongoing grants
  • Design and deliver training for staff in-country and at regional level to increase their capacity to respond to HIV in emergencies
  • Lead HIV mainstreaming throughout all sector responses through support to sector heads

We are looking for an English and French speaking doctor, nurse or midwife with experience of managing HIV programmes in emergency contexts in different countries in Africa. Motivated by a strong desire to see quality services for people living with HIV, you must also understand that this is a relatively new area for Save the Children and so there is much to be done. In addition you must have:

  • Previous experience of working in a management role within a complex country programme in an emergency response or fragile state
  • Previous experience of working in large-scale first phase emergency response
  • Demonstrable ability to set up monitoring & evaluation systems in large complex programmes
  • Previous experience of programme management across multiple locations
  • Ideally, a Masters in Public Health and experience in nutrition programmes, working and living in relevant regions/contexts and experience of working on programmes funded by the Global Fund
  • Willingness to be deployed up to 80% of the time

At Save the Children our mission is to inspire breakthroughs in the way the world treats children and to achieve immediate and lasting change in their lives. If you share our mission, are passionate about making it happen and strongly believe you can contribute then join us and we'll give you every opportunity to succeed. We look forward to hearing from you.
