The Thomson Reuters Foundation is looking for outstanding journalists with experience of finance/business journalism and/or investigative journalism to work on a new scheme concerning illicit finance and tax abuse in Africa.

The scheme will support journalists anywhere in Africa to investigate illicit finance and produce stories highlighting the large amounts of money leaving African economies, often through tax evasion/avoidance by multinationals. It runs until the end of 2016.

We are looking for:

  • People who can work with participating journalists and provide remote mentoring/guidance on specific stories;
  • Two or three investigation coordinators, who will oversee the commissioning of stories and act as a central sounding board and source of advice.

For both roles, you should have practiced, or be practicing, finance/business or investigative journalism to a high level. You must be comfortable with reporting on company finances. You can be based anywhere in the world but you must have a good internet connection.

Mentoring role

The mentoring role requires a collaborative approach to working with journalists from different countries and backgrounds. Mentors will work with participating journalists on stories that, in many cases, may take weeks or months to complete; therefore patience is required, and the willingness to drive the collaboration. We are particularly keen to hear from potential mentors with fluent French and/or Arabic, although fluent English speakers are also welcome to apply.

Investigation coordinators

The investigation coordinators will:

  • receive and assess story/investigation proposals from participating journalists
  • act as a sounding board and provide feedback on story ideas where necessary, to turn them into viable proposals
  • monitor the progress of the investigations
  • provide general support and advice to the community of participating journalists
  • provide regular input and suggestions for stories/new angles that the journalists can explore (potentially using a Facebook group or monthly email)

Investigation coordinators must be familiar with, and interested in, the field of illicit financial flows and research/campaigns on tax issues. For this role, we are keen to hear from people who speak ANY of English, French of Arabic – if you speak more than one, this is a plus.

Compensation

An hourly rate will be agreed for mentoring, and a daily consultancy rate will be agreed for the investigation coordinators, who will spend approximately 1 day per week on average (and possibly more in the early stages of the programme).

In both cases the work will be relatively flexible and can be fitted around other commitments.

To apply

Please email derek.thorne@thomsonreuters.com with your CV and a brief explanation of how your experience matches the role/s. Please specify which of the roles you are interested in.
