We are looking for a Project Manager to join us and project manage the development and piloting of new risk financing solutions and approaches for humanitarian action. You will work with internal teams, NGO design groups and external partners to put in place and manage the operational frameworks that underpin the Start Network’s risk financing experimentation.

The Start Network is a global network of 42 national and international NGOs leading for change in humanitarian aid. Their aim is to deliver effective aid, harnessing the power and knowledge of the network to make faster and better decisions to help people affected by crises in an increasingly complex and uncertain world. They promote a way of working that reduces the power of centralised institutions and give more control to communities and individuals on the front line of crises. To realise this vision, they seek to create a humanitarian sector that is more diverse, decentralised and collaborate. Its programmes include the Start Fund (financing for rapid response to under-the-radar crises of unexpected spikes in humanitarian need); Start Engage (helping communities to prepare for the respond to crises); Start Response (collaboration and aggregation for large scale crises) and Start Labs (fostering innovation in the humanitarian sector). The Start Team is presently hosted by Save the Children UK on behalf of all the network’s member agencies, but is working towards independent status.

As Project Manager – Start Labs you will be accountable for the project management of complex and innovative disaster risk financing initiatives, designing and implementing activity workplans, financial management, donor reporting and effective awards management. You will also be responsible for the remote line management and support of country level Start Network coordinators of risk financing projects to ensure local activities are happening in line with workplans and expectations. In addition you will:

  • Responsible for the delivery of due diligence tasks (legal and operational) required for the launch of disaster risk financing pilots, including coordinating and sequencing inputs from multiple stakeholders such as legal, risk management, SCUK (host organisation) and Start Network board to required timeframes
  • Contribute to building strong internal and external communication tools to sensitise and keep members and stakeholders informed of progress and learning on various Start Labs initiatives.

To be successful you will have strong project and grant management skills with significant experience with proposal writing, budgeting, forecasting. As well as a flexible and initiative-taking attitude, you will have the ability to work autonomously with an unpredictable workload in a ‘start-up’ type of work environment. In addition you will have:

  • Financial management skills
  • Experience in humanitarian context and programming tools
  • The ability to manage and build effective partnerships
  • Outstanding organisation skills, with a proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Fluency in English and French.
