We are looking for a highly-qualified gender advisor to support the launch of the project “Promotion of Resolution 1325 in displacement affected communities in Kitchanga, North Kivu,” funded by the Folke Bernadotte Academy (FBA) in Sweden. The external gender advisor will be responsible for training teams in gender issues and evaluating protection challenges related to gender in and around Kitchanga, North Kivu.

 

The overall objective of the FBA project is the empowerment of women and their

participation in peace and security forums in and around the town on Kitchanga in North Kivu.

 

The consultancy will be carried out in 2 different moments:

 

1st phase of the project: The external Gender Advisor will be responsible of developing trainings modules and community mechanisms aimed at promoting the UNRES1325 in and around Kitchanga, North Kivu.

 

2nd phase of the project:  The Gender Advisor will be asked to return to Kitchanga before the end of the project measuring results and challenges of it.

 

 

Who are we?

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is an International Non-Governmental Organisation that promotes and supports durable solutions to the problems faced by refugees and internally displaced people all over the world. With the vision that no displaced person must be in want of help to find protection and durable solutions, DRC provides assistance and protection to conflict-affected people in many of the major conflicts in Asia, Africa and Middle East. The assistance can consist of relief and other humanitarian aid, rehabilitation and support to returning home, and the promotion of durable solutions.  DRC is operational in DR Congo since 2009. The overall strategic objectives of the programmes are the saving of lives and to support, protect and promote durable solutions for conflict-affected populations. The country office is located in Goma and there are two sub-bases in Beni (North North-Kivu) and Kitchanga.

 

Duties

  • Evaluating women’s participation in social and political processes in and around Kitchanga.
  • Developing a context-specific plan to fully guarantee women involvement in peace building and justice forums in and around Kitchanga (with the possibility of scaling up the activities in the region).
  • Developing training modules on UN Resolution 1325 and its practical application tailored on the Kitchanga context. (in coordination with modules already developed at Protection Cluster level)
  • Providing Tranings of Trainers (ToT)  to FBA project team and partners on UN Resolution 1325 and gender related issues

  • Measuring the impact of the project at the end of it based on the baseline survey conducted at the beginning of the project;
  • Drafting a final report highlighting results, challenges, bottlenecks and recommendations.
  • Providing technical support in terms of gender equality, women rights, gender mainstreaming to DRC mission, if required.

 

About you To be successful in this role you must have:

-       Post-graduate degree in gender studies, international law (expertise in women’s rights), human rights law, international relations, social sciences, or or associated field or a combination of a first level degree and substantial experience in gender equality work at an international level and experience in humanitarian work.

-       Excellent understanding of SGBV, UN res. 1325, gender equality and gender mainstreaming.

-       At least 3-5 years’ experience in humanitarian situations and strong technical background on gender equality programming, implementation, and evaluation.

-       Demonstrated training skills

-       Good strategy and programme development skills with a strong focus on results.

-       Demonstrated program support capacity.

-       Excellent analytical and strategic planning skills and experience in conducting gender analyses and planning.

-       Strong and effective communication skills and proven ability to negotiate and influence change.

-       Good team building and advocacy skills

-       Demonstrated ability to build capacity/train others.

-       Strong writing skills.

-       Ability to work in a diverse, multi-cultural setting with sensitivity to the local context.

-       Excellent communication and facilitation skills

-       Excellent working knowledge of French and English (both written and spoken)

 

Desirable skills and experience:

-       Previous working experience in North Kivu, DR Congo.

-       Working knowledge of Swahili is an asset (spoken).

 

Terms and duration of the ConsultancyDRC will offer the successful applicant a consultancy in two parts of approximately 1 month: 1 month from as soon as possible to conduct the initial assessments, developing training modules, providing ToT, and to oversee the project design (in coordination with the Protection Coordinator), and one month from mid-February/March 2015 to draft a report measuring the impact of the project and providing recommendations.
