£39,000 per annum, Permanent contract based in London

We are looking for a motivated and experienced Senior Conflict & Humanitarian Advocacy Adviser to lead our advocacy on protecting children in conflict and to support the management of a flexible, ambitious and high-performing team.

Working in more than 120 countries, Save the Children does whatever it takes to create breakthroughs in the way the world treats children. Our Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns Division is where we drive political agendas at national and global levels. We’ve integrated lobbying, policy, research and campaigning into one agile, powerful engine for change. Together, we save children’s lives, fight for their rights and help them fulfil their potential

As Senior Conflict & Humanitarian Advocacy Adviser, you will manage members of the team and lead our advocacy on priority conflict situations and our reaction to new conflicts, trends and other crises. You will develop and adapt our policy positions and strategy, lobby our targets, forge effective relations with partners and work closely and collaboratively with teams across the Save the Children movement. You will also:

  • Establish and strengthen the integration of the team in the wider organisation, including with colleagues in the Campaigns, Media, Communications and Government Relations teams, our country programmes and across the Save the Children movement, ensuring alignment of priorities and approaches and effective ways of working
  • Build and maintain a strong external network of foreign policy and political influencers
  • Draft compelling expert briefings and other written products for internal and external audiences
  • Represent Save the Children externally, including in the media as required
  • Deputise for the head of team as needed

To be successful you will be motivated by having a real-world impact. You will have a proven ability to achieve change through advocacy and demonstrable knowledge of conflict-related and humanitarian issues.  You will also have:

  • A flexible, ambitious and “can do” approach, including the willingness to drop work in order to pick up other priorities and to play a leadership role on reactive or unplanned work across the Division
  • Ability and willingness to learn more, develop skills and fill gaps in knowledge, and to support others in doing the same
  • Strong management and team-building skills
  • Proven ability to produce high-quality and compelling written materials for policy and public audiences
  • First-class verbal communication skills, appropriate for high-level external representation (for example, lobbying ministers, presenting to a Select Committee or talking to the Media) and proven ability to influence others
  • Strong strategic-thinking and analytical skills and the ability quickly to absorb, make sense of and communicate new information and ideas
  • Willingness to travel at short notice, including to high-risk and uncomfortable locations

Expertise in other areas of Save the Children’s work (e.g. Programming, Media, Comms and Fundraising) and fluency in Arabic and/or French are desirable.

At Save the Children we are committed to the safeguarding and protection of children in our work. We will do everything possible to ensure that only those who are suitable to work with children are recruited to work for us. This post is subject to a range of vetting checks including a criminal records disclosure.

Our mission is to inspire breakthroughs in the way the world treats children and to achieve immediate and lasting change in their lives. If you share our mission, are passionate about making it happen and strongly believe you can contribute then join us and we'll give you every opportunity to succeed. We look forward to hearing from you.
